Marist College in Bendigo is yet another project that celebrates glue-laminated timber beams. The architects on board this sizeable project was the team from Y2 Architecture – a group who are well known for creating functional, creative, people-centered design.

Established in 1973, Y2 Architecture ‘has more than 40 years experience in educational, health, commercial and community projects’. Not only are they leaders in architecture, interior and urban design, they have “built a reputation around delivering architecture that while rich in aesthetic value, is focused on going beyond this to enrich the lives of the people and communities who engage with it” as explained by Y2 Architecture.

Marist College Bendigo is made up of varied small, medium and large flexible spaces. “The large span structure via a timber truss system and consistent grid layout allows for future layout modifications” as stated by Y2 Architecture.

To get the best quality Glulam trusses, Y2 Architecture collaborated with VicBeam and The Truss Joint. VicBeam supplied GL18 Victorian ash Glulam beams made from our SUPA17 timber – these were then delivered over three stages to The Truss Joint for construction. VicBeam explained “Spanning up to 12 metres, these glulam architectural trusses are extremely impressive”.

VicBeam supply glue-laminated timber to wholesalers and major retailers for domestic and commercial markets. The reason why more and more architects are choosing to use glulam is because “unlike non-timber structural members, glulam offers a store of carbon, can often contribute to 6-star energy rating builds and is a sustainable use of timber” as stated by VicBeam.

What exactly is SUPA17? It is solid pieces of our trusted Victorian ash with mechanical properties known to span even further than traditional F17. SUPA17 is third party audited for strength and quality and is commonly used as a structural timber. To find out more about our SUPA17, click here.
