The brief was to build and execute 287 townhouses in Port Melbourne – all being either 3 or 4 storeys high. Each town house required a natural transition from floor to floor, which is why open stairs were chosen for the upper areas. Cost is a major factor when it comes to any mass construction in Australia. Both Canny and Eric Jones found Alpine Oak to be the most cost effective in terms of quality and price. “Compared to other solid timber products, it’s a very cost effective option for large scale projects, as we installed 667 staircases” explained Alexandra at Canny.
