‘Tom Thumb is a character of English folklore. Tom is not bigger than his father’s thumb, and his adventures include being swallowed by a cow, tangling with giants, and becoming a favourite of King Arthur’ – the story behind the skillfully named Tom Thumb.
A limited budget partnered with an experienced architect, generates a praiseworthy space. Tom Thumb is a minute, two storey café on Flinders Lane in Melbourne that was design by Ben Edwards, founder of Studio Edwards.
Ben Edwards is not only an award-winning architect, but also offers interiors and conceptual design to clients. The philosophy behind Studio Edwards is to be ‘dedicated to pushing these principles (architecture, interiors and conceptual design) in innovative and unexpected directions’.
Despite the narrow frontage, Tom Thumb takes on both the identity of the new owners whilst being intimate and inviting. Ben explains “Seagrass lines both the lower & upper ceiling, softening the acoustics and making the interior more intimate and a little hairier”.
Australian Oak Engineered Flooring can be used in more ways than one, clearly demonstrated in this cosy café with it being used throughout. “Timber Flooring was used for the bench top block as well as the shelving, which was supported with a G clamp from the local hardware store” as further explained by Ben.
Australian Oak Engineered Flooring is our latest product to hit the market and we couldn’t be more excited for you to see it for yourself! Order a sample here or find out more about this innovative new product when you visit vicash.com.au/engineered-timber-flooring.
Not only does this project scream excellence, it was also nominated for the Australian Interior Design Awards 2017 Hospitality Design shortlist. Well done to the team at Studio Edwards & Joseph Hoang!
