The Space

Garnet St is the latest light-filled renovation to grace the suburb of Brunswick. The fluidity of the design created the flexibility warranted for a young family of four.

“we celebrate Australian made and choose to support local wherever we can”

Melbourne based architectural practice Kirsten Johnstone Architecture was at the helm of this creation. The practice is ‘dedicated to creating thoughtful and innovative spaces, specialising in residential design’. With a focus on sustainable architecture, the firm conceptualised the perfect family space whilst utilising natural and modern materials.

The inner urban home’s original dwelling was transformed into a highly functional and beautiful space. A crucial factor of the brief was to use local materials where possible.

‘Support your local’ was conceptualised for the one reason – to support Australian products and Australian jobs, and Kirsten Johnstone Architecture have done just that – “it is fantastic to have a Victorian supplier of a quality product that we can specify knowing it provides support to local businesses and employers”. To continue with this theme, Australian Oak engineered flooring and solid GoodWood Victorian ash were used throughout different applications in the kitchen.

What makes the ASH suite of products truly unique is the ability to create an interrupted design by matching the one timber throughout. Kirsten adds “We additionally designed the built in dining table with matching timber and finish to create a cohesive and unified aesthetic to this family home”. Specified was Australian Oak engineered flooring coated ‘natural’ in a UV option and a custom solid Victorian ash table top stained in the Grimes and Sons ‘Feather Mix B’ to match.

“We chose Australian Oak for a number of reasons; it is locally sourced from a native Australian hardwood that is sustainably managed but ultimately it is an incredibly beautiful product”
